01 — Background

An apparel line waiting for an audience.

Nike was preparing to reveal its apparel lines for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

They wanted a fun, dynamic way to present them — to fans, and to the people attending the games themselves.

02 — Problem

How do you let someone try clothes on when nobody will touch anything?

Problem, in detail

A retail idea, landing in the middle of a pandemic.

This was the height of COVID-19. Social distancing was the norm, and people were actively avoiding communal surfaces.

The question became a design constraint rather than an obstacle: how could we engage an audience and help them try on new Nike apparel in a way that was both safe and entertaining?

03 — Solution

Digital AR mirrors, controlled by gesture alone.

We helped create digital AR mirrors for a Nike exhibition: large format screens with cameras, which customers could stand in front of, see themselves in, and control entirely with hand gestures.

From there they selected items out of curated Nike collections and tried them on virtually. Motion tracking matched the CGI clothing to the wearer's own movement, so the garment moved with the body rather than sitting on it as a static image — which is what made people stay with an item long enough to consider it.

The whole thing ran through an interface that was fun to spend time playing with, which in an exhibition context is the entire job.
